Taft Park Richfield Minnesota, Best PARK in RICHFIELD?
Taft Park, located in Richfield Minnesota has many great amenities and ranks as one of my favorite parks in the city. Is Taft the best park in Richfield?
Richfield has a total of 22 parks in the city, Taft located in the North Eastern corner of the city makes up the NE border of the city with Minneapolis along highway 62 and 77. With 37 acres of land and 14 acre Taft lake it is the 3rd largest park in the city, with Wood lake park being the largest at 150 acres.
Things to do at Taft lake park.
According to the city Taft Park has 9 amenities and features. One feature that is not listed is Airplane spotting. Depending on the flow of traffic to MSP airport (wind decides if taft is in line with arrivals or departures) I observed a plane every minute coming in to land. If silence is golden then TAFT may not be the best park. But if you want to take some pictures of planes than TAFT is a pretty amazing option. Lets take a look at the list of amenities.
On one of my trips to Taft I noticed an old fishing rod leaning against the near trash. My first thought, was "is there fish in Taft lake" and so I checked the DNR websites lake finder, and found my answer. Taft lake in Richfield is full of fish! There is 2 fishing piers and pretty much the whole shoreline is accessible.
As far as the best places to catch fish in taft lake, it looks like almost anywhere along the shoreline is good. If I was going to fish in taft lake I would go for Northerns with the biggest minnow I could find and depending on the time of year fish in 7-15 feet of water.
Can you kayak at taft lake?
Yes, you can kayak at taft lake! Taft lake has an amazing dock just for launching kayaks and is about a football field from the parking lot. Taft lake also has self serve Kayak rental, which is perfect to try kayaking for the first time or if you want to go fishing. I checked the city of Richfield website for kayak rental and here is a break down of the rentals.
"Kayak and Paddleboard rental is available on Taft Lake. Make reservations and pay online to rent kayaks (single and two-person) and paddleboards for two-hour blocks between 6:30 am and 6:30 pm on Taft Lake (located at the north end of Taft Park at 62nd and Bloomington Avenue). Single kayaks are $20, tandem kayaks are $35, and paddleboards are $25. Weather-permitting, rentals continue into September."
If your ready to rent a kayak on lake taft today online booking is available I checked the calendar and found that as of the date of writing this article (mid-oct) that rentals are done for the year, but I have added a to-do in my Richfield Calendar to rent a kayak at taft and catch some fish.
Distance around taft lake to walk?
I checked all trails, for information on the distance around taft lake and how long it would take. Taft lake trail is a 1.3 mile loop. Depending on how fast you walked (or ran) around taft it could take 10 minutes or all day. When I was at taft lake I saw many families using the green space to relax and nature watch.
Richfield has many amazing parks and Taft park is at the top of that list. Taft park located in the North East Corner Of Richfield is 51.72 total acres, made up of 4 parcels & Taft Lake. The met council owns 3 pieces of the park, the city of Richfield owns one parcel of 14.65 Acres, Taft lake is 13.55 acres leaving the met council with 23.52 acres.
Is Taft Park the BEST park in Richfield?
Bests are always subjective and based on individual perspective. As a pilot I really enjoy walking around TAFT lake and watching the air traffic overhead. I understand this may not be for everyone, but taft has many other amazing features that make it number 2-overall in my book. The fact that it has a fishing Pier makes a great local park to take the kiddos to and fish, which is an amazing past time for families with kids. Taft park is definitely worth checking out for that alone.
